Makes 1 pint

2.5cuptomato puree
0.5cupapple cider vinegar
0.5cupworcestershire sauce
0.25cupbrown mustard
2tbspwhole grain mustard

  1. Measure and add all ingredients except the liquid smoke to a sauce pan over medium heat. Mix everything until smooth using a whisk and bring to a low simmer. Put a lid over the saucepan, but don't cover completely. Simmer on low for 45 min or so, whisking carefully every 15 minutes.
  2. Turn off heat and stir in the liquid smoke. Cover completely and let cool.
  3. Transfer to a mason jar and store in the refrigerator. Let the sauce come to room temperature before serving.

This is our recipe for a classic tomato-based BBQ sauce. It's sweet, tangy, and spicy, and it will go great with pretty much any BBQ, like pork, beef, chicken, or just eaten from the jar with a spoon. This recipe makes a great base, and varying the ingredients a bit won't matter too much (we usually don't measure precisely when we make it). So if you're feeling adventurous, add other flavors like Bourbon, pureed fruit, or coffee. If you use liquid smoke, check the ingredients on the label—it shouldn't contain any ingredients other than condensed smoke (e.g. no natural or artificial flavors).
